Reduce Surprises at workplace

At workplace we like to plan out career with timely personal goals setting exercise. Most often our personal goals are not completely/partially aligned to the task we have to perform. At the end of the year we are silently surprised to see that we are no where near our personal goals.

How do we navigate the surprises at the workplace?

Read the space

The project has a set of targets to be delivered by certain time frame. Sometimes we misread the situation we are working in.

The management prefers employee who are aligned with the target of the team. But these targets would not necessarily satisfy the employees personal technical apatite. It might make the employee feel restricted or constrained.

We need to study the spectrum of the targets and the tasks associated with these targets. We need to find the work which most nears to the personal goals.

Know your project

Most of the us try to speed up our on-boarding process to a team, which can cause us to task the less “interesting” and high priority tasks.

It becomes very important to onboard at a steady pace and get the necessary and complete knowledge about the project. Gathering enough knowledge of the project is important for good decision making for task selection.

We need to interact more with our colleges and manager to understand the various areas the project deals in day to day basis.

Increase healthy interaction

We should hold as many interaction with the peers to understand their tasks. It would provide the technical details of the project. You might find your area of interest while just interacting with some of the them.

The sharing of knowledge and ideas always from a healthy interaction and we should always strive to build it. It’s not guaranteed that by default a workplace will be the most healthy interacting ground but we should strive to make then one.

Find your comrades

Neither everyone you interact will like you nor you will like them even if the environment is highly inclusive. Finding the comrades becomes important at the work.

Workplace Comrades are people that might be anyone whom you find most trusting, interesting or any other qualities a person gets individually attracted to in a workplace.

Comrades will help you with the energy needed to survive a workplace at its worst, they are people who will have your back. Its always interesting to find someone with same technical apatite and you bond well with them but they might not be you Comrades.

Managerial health check

Managers are not someone to feared off. They are can be the health check you need for your impact and goals satisfaction in a workplace. It most beneficial to build that health check mechanism with your manager.

Manager need to be aware of your career goals which help you demand tasks within that spectrum and also help them to keep you aligned with the project targets and your personal career goals.

Sometimes we can get carried away either with our career goals or project targets which can end up hurting us. If we regularly discuss both career goals or project targets with the managers then we have the real-time and historical health check on the direction we are moving.

Give time to a decision

You might get surprised with the outcome or the bi-product of decision which you have stuck with for a longer. When we hurry in analyzing a task or project, we can misjudge the impact of it. We can be hasty in dropping the task or leaving the project or leaving company we don’t analyze our impact to workplace at suitable time-frame.

Giving more time to a workplace help us better analyze the impact we create, which will help us create more trust with the team and take the next step.
